FNDC Box Culvert Renewals

Client: Far North District Council

Waharua Road – Weat Coast Road – Whangaroa Road

FNR were engaged by FNDC to carry out the Box culvert Upgrades in three areas; Mitimiti, Te Hapua and Whangaroa. The scope included removal of the existing culvert (concrete or steel armco) and install of the new. FNR implemented an Environmental Management Plan to ensure we efficiently managed the scope while considering and minimising the potential environmental impact.
Throughout the culvert installation process, FNR diligently handled various crucial aspects, such as service location and protection, sediment control, water management, and dewatering. FNR maintained open communication with the local Iwi, addressing their concerns and inquiries to ensure a collaborative and respectful approach to the project. Our team’s expertise and attention to detail ensured the successful completion of the project while prioritising safety, environmental considerations, and community engagement.

FNR implemented a strategic construction methodology to address the challenges posed by the small site area and the road’s significance. Prioritizing open communication with the local iwi before commencing the project further facilitated timely construction and kept the road accessible. During the construction of the fish passage, FNR encountered challenges with continuous water flow through the culvert, posing both project and environmental concerns. Recognising the significance of this issue, we swiftly adjusted our methodology to implement a temporary water diversion. This measure effectively prevented sediment from entering the natural waterway and enabled our concrete works to set securely. By proactively addressing this obstacle, we ensured a smoother construction process and minimised any adverse environmental impacts.
